GGS 11.18 One & Done 3: Wonderfalls
This week on Geek Girl Soup, it was the first recording day of the month, so that means “One and Done.” This time we’re discussing “Wonderfalls,” the awesomely sweet, and also dark, comedy about a slacker Millennial who works in a souvenir shop at Niagara Falls.
Created by Bryan Fuller (of “Hannibal” fame) and starring Carline Dhavernas (also in “Hannibal”), “Wonderfalls” is the story of what happens when Jaye (Dhavernas) is forced to come out of her apathetic isolationist lifestyle to do the bidding of inanimate objects with faces that start to talk to her. Literally.
Through cryptic but direct messages (oxymoron?—“Let him go” and “She’s going to kill him”), Jaye finds herself helping out and caring about family and friends (imagine that!), as well as random strangers. She makes a significant difference in many lives. Well, the lives that pop up in the 13 episodes that the show lasted, to be precise.
By the way, the fabulously foundational Lee Pace plays Jaye’s brother. Katie Finneran (“Bloodline”) plays Jaye’s sister. Mom and dad are played by Diana Scarwid (“Silkwood” and “What Lies Beneath”) and William Sadler (“The Shawshank Redemption” and “Die Hard 2”). Tracie Thoms (“Station 19” and “The Devil Wears Prada”) plays Jaye’s best friend, Mahandra. There are wonderful cameos by Rue McClanahan, Carrie Preston, Kimberly Scott, and Louise Fletcher.
We wish that you had access to this show. Maybe you own the DVD? That’s how we watched it. It’s not streaming anywhere. So, you can buy the DVD for only $11.99 on eBay. “Wonderfalls” has an IMDb rating of 8.3 out of 10! (Why the heck did this thing get cancelled?!?)
Next week we’re back to the 7 Deadly Sins theme with Greed. We’ll be watching “Wall Street” (HBO Max), “The Wolf of Wall Street” (Pluto), and “Boiler Room” (Hoopla). #notallwallstreetdudes (Russia ain’t the only one with oligarchs, ha ha!)
