Bonus: Spirit Awards Recap
It was a wonderful night for the Film Independent Spirit Awards, and the Geek Girls were there for it—virtually, at least.
As voting members of Film Independent, we were excited to see if our choices won. Well, our batting average was awesome for baseball. But we’ve done better in the past when choosing and predicting winners. Sometimes you just can’t account for taste, ha ha.
We’re thrilled with Maggie Gyllenhaal’s three wins for “The Lost Daughter.” Though she should have had an editor help with her”Lawrence of Arabia”-length acceptance speeches. Still, yay for this stunning film!
Also, super yay for “Reservation Dogs”! We learned only that evening about Taika Waititi’s involvement in the show. The entire cast was just lovely on stage. What an awesome show!
And at least “Mass”—one of our favorite films of 2021—won the Robert Altman Award for Best Ensemble Cast. Director Fran Kranz had a lovely acceptance speech about how he tried to attend a screening of Altman’s “Short Cuts” when Kranz was just 12. Yeah, didn’t get in. But he’s been a lifelong fan and was over-the-moon at winning this award.
