Bonus: “We Need to Talk About Cosby”: W. Kamau Bell’s Look at Art vs the Artist
In this bonus episode of Geek Girl Soup, we’re discussing what we learned from W. Kamau Bell’s 4-part documentary, “We Need to Talk About Cosby” (Showtime).
We’ve had several discussions over the years about separating the art from the artist. As in, can we do it? Not just “can it be done?” But can we specifically do it?
This documentary sheds some new light on our answer. It goes deep into Cosby’s background and the truly significant, positive impact he’s made in the film/TV industry and in TV education for kids. We three certainly have lots of positive memories of Cosby and his productions.
But…
The documentary shows just how deep and far back Cosby’s drugging and assault of women go. They were allegedly happening for as long as he was in the industry—since he first became a comedian. And there were rumors pretty much from the beginning.
Listen in to learn more about the documentary and to find out how our view of “art vs artist” has changed. And be sure to watch this excellent documentary on Showtime.
