This week at Geek Girl Soup, we’re continuing with our 7 Deadly Sins theme. This time, we’re talking envy with “The Talented Mr. Ripley” (SHO).
First, we chat about Kelly’s trip to Amsterdam for the Septimius Awards where the film she’s the assistant editor on—“Introducing Brian Broome”—was nominated for Best Documentary. (We’ll let you know when it’s streaming!) She tells us about an Australian filmmaker she met—Sarah Legg—whose film “Cherubhead” was up for Best Actress from Oceania and Best Picture from Oceania. “Cherubhead” isn’t available online yet. But it will be screening at the Revelation Perth International Film Festival in July—hopefully in the online portion. You can find Sarah at @sarahlegg_ on Instagram. Check out this fabulous article about her, and watch the trailer for her film.
You’ve certainly seen “The Talented Mr. Ripley” since it came out in 1999. It stars Matt Damon, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jude Law, Cate Blanchett, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and Jake Davenport. The film screams envy as Tom (Matt Damon) covets not only Dickie’s (Jude Law) ass, but also his villa, his clothes, his decor, and his entire lifestyle. Tom desires to be loved by Dickie; then he desires to become Dickie.
Tom is creepy and needy, but it’s only Freddie (Philip Seymour Hoffman) who truly sees the reality of the man.
Patricia Highsmith’s titular novel is being turned into a TV series for Showtime called “Ripley”—eight episodes for season 1—starring “sexy priest” Andrew Scott and Dakota Fanning. The series is written and directed by Steve Zaillian, who co-created HBO’s “The Night Of” and who won an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay for “Schindler’s List.” Due out in 2023.
The Tribeca Film Festival has started, which we’re attending from home. And that’s next week’s assignment. So, until then… geek on!
