12.30 Moms of Distinction

See this content in the original post

Movie and TV moms: the good, the bad, and the truly despicable. We grew up wishing that certain TV moms were our mom. We’ve watched movies wondering, “Oh, my lord, what is she doing?!”

Today we’re discussing moms of distinction in TV and film: those we love and those we love to hate.

Our official homework this week is “Mommy Dead and Dearest” on HBO Max—the documentary about mom Dee Dee Blanchard and her daughter Gypsy Rose Blanchard. Dee Dee told Gypsy, her doctors, and the world that Gypsy had multiple serious illnesses, lied about her age, overmedicated her, and actually kept her ill since babyhood. Gypsy freed herself from her uber-toxic mom when she had her boyfriend brutally murder Dee Dee. The story was turned into a docudrama limited series in 2019 on Hulu called “The Act,” featuring Patricia Arquette, Chloe Sevigny, and Joey King.

We also discuss some role-model film and TV moms. Some are probably yours, too, especially if you were watching TV in the 1980s! And one of our moms of distinction may surprise you! Think horror movie!

Finally, Cort shares Soap Time, and we catch you up on a few other things we’ve been watching.
