GGS 12.14 The Pale Blue Eye
Christian Bale (“I’m Batman”)! Harry Melling (yes, cousin Dudley)! Toby Jones (character actor in, like, everything)! Timothy Spall (yes, Wormtail)! We had great expectations for this film. It is a good mystery, and two of us enjoyed it. It just didn’t get all the stars we had hoped to give it.
“The Pale Blue Eye” follows Bale’s Augustus Landor as he investigates a gruesome murder at West Point. He is assisted by cadet Edgar Allan Poe. Yes, “quoth the Raven, ‘nevermore’” Poe.
The film is atmospherically lovely. Beautiful music by Howard Shore (“LOTR,” “The Hobbit,” “The Departed,” “The Aviator”). And the story is twisty. Nice! Melling is perfect as Edgar Allan Poe. He has totally moved beyond the bullying Dudley.
Check out this SPOILERIFIC episode to find out what we loved and didn’t love. And watch the film for the atmosphere and the surprise.
