GGS 12.09 One & Done: Kings

Our One-and-Done show this month is the 2009 NBC series “Kings,” starring “Deadwood’s” Ian McShane and Marvel’s Sebastian Stan.
NBC was really ambitious with “Kings,” a modern-day retelling of the story of David and Goliath. “Kings” takes place in the fictional world of Shiloh. And God is an actual player from episode 1. We aren’t left wondering if King Silas and Reverend Samuels really do hear the Word of God. They do. And it’s fascinating that NBC took on this sprawling biblical fantasy.
Unfortunately, the network didn’t market it properly, and viewers didn’t tune in. So, the network moved the show to the dreaded Saturday-night slot, where it met a quick one-season death.
It’s quite sad because there are so many wonderful characters we would have loved to explore more deeply. Knowing what happens in the Bible, we would have enjoyed seeing how this David becomes the king of Shiloh. Too bad “Kings” was made by HBO. We easily could have gotten five seasons from it.
Next weeks starts the annual Christmas Extravaganza viewing season! We’ll be watching myriad goodies, such as the Norwegian “Home for Christmas” and the new Italian remake “I Hate Christmas.”
